Italian duo Alberto & Alex, aka Modular Project, have been making waves on the underground scene since the conception of the project in 2014. In a short space of time they have achieved stellar releases on OFF, Moodmusic, Motek and and Fabio Gianelli’s imprint Perpetualis. In line with their forthcoming remix on Constant Circles, we invited them along for a chat and a guest slot on the radio show.
Firstly, tell us about Modular Project – you work as a duo, so how did you meet and when/why did you decide to work together?
We met almost 3 years ago, we worked individually as resident djs in a club not so far from Milan. After one year we decided to join in a duo ‘cause we share the same ideas of music and our competition merge perfectly and so in 2014 we created Modular Project.
How has being based in Milan influenced you musically and what is your top tip for anyone visiting?
Milan has undergone a radical change during the years especially for clubbing scene for this reason we tried to keep up to date and evolve our style trying to create our recognizable sound. The best scenario in Milan actually is Volt club where underground music and fashion perfectly work together.
How do you work as a duo – do you both have certain roles in the studio, and on stage?
As a duo we have found our balance, we put our heads together and we figure something out but, of course, we have our specialization: Alex on the synths and Alberto on the drums.
On stage do you perform as a live act, or as a DJ duo? what can people expect when they see you perform?
On the stage we perform as duo djs but we’re working on a live set that it’s coming out the in the next year. People want to escape from the daily life, they want to dance and fun that’s our mission and at the same time educate them to our sound.
You are residents at a night called VOLT – tell us more about that? What is the project and where is it based? Who have you played alongside?
Since 2015 Volt Club, situated in the centre of Milan, has become our home and we played alongside big artists as Scuba, Bambounou, Barnt, Lake People, Cristian Löffler and so on…
What has been your favourite VOLT event so far and why?
Every party is different, It’s always a new adventure and it’s amazing that Volt project is really taking off and it’s going to be the best club of the city.
What do you have coming up in the near future in terms of releases and gigs?
Our next releases consist of a new EP on Perpetualis with 2 special tracks, the first one is our original with a great collaboration with Jinadu and the second one is a remix from Fabio Giannelli. Another important remix for Blondish coming up in January on Rebirth Records and then the remix for Nandu on Constant Circles. We can’t wait!

You have just remixed Nandu for a forthcoming CC release. How did you approach the remix and what direction did you go?
We approach the remix in a different way thinking about the effect on the dancefloor, trying to find the right combination between melodies and groove, to touch the hearts of the people who are inside the club.
Tell us about your guest mix on CC Radio – what have you included and how did you put it together?
In our CC Radioshow we put some bomb tracks that we are playing at the moment including “Synapses”, our track came out last August on Perpetualis. We hope to have a great success and enjoy the sound!
