UK based producer Dubrovnik makes his debut on Constant Circles with a deep tech house cut “Backlight” on our SPIRALS series. We invited him along for a chat and a guest slot on the radio show.

So firstly, what is the story behind the name Dubrovnik?

Haha good question! I don’t really know what it is but I’ve got a fondness for unusual looking/sounding names ! Weird, I know. I think I was partly influenced when my favoured football team played European ties back in the 90’s and a host of top Eastern European football clubs came to play such as Steaua Bucharest, Red Star Belgrade, Sparta Prague and Levski Sofia amongst many others. I wanted to create a moniker for my productions and liked how it sounded. My wife and I visited Dubrovnik on our honeymoon a few years ago and I must say it is an amazing place with the most friendly people.

Where are you based and how has your home country or town influenced your music & career?

I’m based in Glasgow, Scotland. I began clubbing in my late teens visiting venues such as the now sadly defunct legendary The Arches 🙁 and Sub Club for nights such as Pressure and Subculture. I loved the experiences and was totally blown away by the atmosphere and energy these nights and venues created. (Nowadays we’re exceptionally lucky to have such an amazing array of artists such as Slam and club venues such as Sub Club, SWG3, La Cheetah, The Berkeley Suite and Club 69 to name a few on our door step that we really are spoiled here ! The strength and depth of talent in Glasgow is unbelievable from established and up and coming artists/djs and is greatly influential)  I began djing after attending these nights but it took me a lot longer to start producing. I attended Shoogle Studios Soma Skool in Glasgow with Simon Stokes (Petrichor) to learn how to operate Ableton and was hooked after the fantastic courses that Simon delivered. This is when the Dubrovnik project kicked off. Once completing the courses we’re invited to a forum whereby all other people that have taken part in the courses are kept connected and gives a platform to share music, production techniques and feedback on work that we’ve produced. I’ve met some really great people so far from the courses which has led to a group of us hosting club nights and a monthly radio show under ‘Alumni’ based at Groove City Radio to give opportunity to the ‘Shooglers’ to showcase their talent. A record label has been launched in the last year (Alumni Records Glasgow) ran by Simon Stokes and Kenny Wasp (DABJ). Recently Simon, alongside Rob from Mia Dora, held “Listening Sessions” in club environments (most recently La Cheetah club) to let the producers hear their work over a proper club system and receive feedback. The last session hosted was a great success.

How would you describe your sound – do you think your music falls into a particular genre?

Difficult question ! I don’t intentionally make music to fit a genre, wherever it fits – it fits I suppose. I do love deep dubbed chords and atmospheres in my productions. DJing wise I’m comfortable playing deep house to deep techno records and everything in between. I was once told the secret to good club records is predictability that changes if that makes sense ! I’m quite happy for my music to be in the public domain and not too fussed on genre.

You are making your debut on Constant Circles with “Backlight” – how did you approach this project and how did the idea come together?

I’m absolutely chuffed to be given the opportunity to work with a great label, thank you !! Like most projects I’ll start with a blank canvas and create a groove that I like. If my productions don’t have a solid groove I won’t get very far as I’ll lose interest. I’ll lay the foundations that way then add what I feel is needed to develop the track – mainly create and build groove, intensity and atmosphere. That’s what happened with Backlight, having the filtered chords and pads giving the said intensity and atmosphere with the kick, bass and percussion supporting and contributing to the groove. Throw in a few complimentary elements, fx and arrange and thankfully the finished project arrived !!!

Tell us your deepest darkest secret?

Well, not really a secret but I’m a PGA Professional (Golf Professional) !

What is your dream label to release on and why?

I’m not sure I have one as yet apart from Constant Circles of course !!! I’m just really grateful for the opportunity the labels I’ve released on so far believed in my music and gave it a chance ! Thank you !! I also look forward to the labels I’ll work with in the future 🙂

What do you have coming up in terms of releases and gigs?

Continuing to plow on with the ‘Alumni’ stuff in radio shows, listening sessions and club nights. Not much else planned gig wise but hoping that changes as my productions develop and continue to gain some interest. Release wise I have ‘Backlight’ with Constant Circles and hopefully something later in the year also lined up. I have a few unreleased projects waiting to be send to labels. At this moment its a little on hold as I’m moving house and building a new studio in the garage which is super exciting to see how it develops !!!

How did you put together your guest mix for the radio show & what have you included – any exclusives or surprises?

I dug through the vaults a bit for this one and brought together a lot of my favourite tracks. I’ve played a lot of these at our ‘Alumni’ events and went down great – groove, intensity and atmosphere !!!! Some great music from Marco Zenker, Endian, Delta Funktionen, Papol, Jonas Kopp, Markus Suckut and Regen included, ENJOY !!!!! 🙂

With over a decade in the industry, Mia Lucci has fully established herself at the forefront of the modern House and Techno movement, as the boss of pioneering imprint Kindisch and also as an artist in her own right. Here she showcases her production prowess and originality in her latest “8 Pounds” EP, delivering three outstanding tracks packed with credibility and dance floor goodness.

With each track standing solidly in it’s own right, it is impossible to pick a favourite from this release. However, we managed to grab the first play of “Sleepless” – a deep groovy excursion, where an air of experimentalism flutters through the tones, as a thick percussive line drives the energy forward into a sonic wonderland.

For their latest offering, French imprint Empirical Magnetism presents one of France’s most renowned producers, DJ W!LD. A true proponent of top class house and techno, W!LD has been releasing a host of well-received gems for well over a decade now, chiefly via his two labels, Catwash, Dailycid and W. This latest release is another breath of fresh air, and sees the Parisian in vintage form, as he lays down three original cuts, the likes of which he’s built his name on over the years. The whole EP oozes with credibility and is skilfully crafted with stripped down grooves to work the late night dance floor.

We have the first play of lead track ‘Genius’. An immediately catchy, infectious gem, it’s indicative of W!ld’s penchant for no-nonsense, heads down, atmospheric house music. Full of taut drums and muffled, sporadic vocal snippets that weave in and out, it progresses at a frantic but subdued pace, all the while managing to keep a restrained flow before the colourful bassline crops up. One for the heads.

So firstly, what is the story behind the name Maximalism?
Well we’d love to provide some sort of cool story behind this name but frankly it’s just our names put together, Maxim and Alicia. ‘Maximalism’ stands for the permanent process of understanding one another and all that comes with it.

What is your background and how did you get into music?
Alicia was destined to be a pianist all the way from early childhood, she was focused on music and she never got a chance to study other disciplines in depth. She loves music theory and classic music, however she spent 6 years playing in a jazz band and 2 years studying jazz in music college. Then she dropped out of the college, moved to China and decided that she wants to go “crazy” aka make electronic music. She went to SAE oxford to study and when she completed the course she was ready to understand half of what Max was talking about all those years, because he was all about sitting in the studio trying out new compressors, finding secret plugin chains to enlighten boring sounds, buying synths and then selling them and buying new ones to find something special. At that time he was making his first steps organizing underground techno parties (in Belarus every techno party is underground), he DJed for free like a thousand times and he really wanted to bring intelligent electronic music to masses (strongly put, masses means 100 people in our city). And so he did, little by little:)

Where are you based and how has your home country or town influenced your music & career?
We’re based in Minsk, Belarus. Many people don’t know a lot about our country because we’re just not as open mentally to the outer world as the rest of Europe, so that’s why sometimes we feel a bit isolated from the community and not really following latest trends, though the real influence always comes from our favorite artists, musicians etc.

How would you describe your sound – do you think your music falls into a particular genre?
We try not to tag our music as every time it’s different, right nor we do electronic dance music with some acid and some piano.. guess it’s always better to hear it once than explain it twice:)

You just made your debut on Constant Circles with “Apologies” – how did you approach this project and how did the idea come together?
It’s a funny story. This song is actually about our cat, Kefa. Alicia accidentally lost him when we were at our dacha and she thought she’d lost him forever coz he didn’t come back for a few days. She wrote piano version and lyrics and then her babushka (nana) called her and said that Kefa has returned, wounded. Then a year later when Alicia was pregnant with our son we decided to give him away to another family because Kefa was a bit out of his mind and could’ve been potentially dangerous to our son. And so Alicia felt that she betrayed him in some way so the lyrics are still has its pain.

What is your production process – is each project different? And what are your key pieces of studio kit?
We’ve been working together for many years now so we have kind of a template (a mental one) how things are gonna go. Normally first it’s either Alicia with the melody or Max with the beat. Then Alicia puts together an arrangement and Max finishes it up. The key pieces would be nord electro 5D and x0xb0x.

How do you work as a duo – do you both have specific roles in the studio and when performing?
We definitely do. Otherwise it would be chaos 🙂 We were practicing a lot to be able to play live two meters away from each other and not to talk during the gig. It works fine now but the first attempts were just miserable! When performing, Max controls the core of the live (structure and arrangement) and goes wild with playing on parameters and effects. Alicia sings and sticks to her beloved nord, arranging between-tunes situations with some piano and organ improvisations. It works good as most tunes are strong and groovy and it’s always a good decision to put some nice moving chords just to spice it up a little.

Can you tell us something most people won’t know about you?
Most people don’t realise that we are parents and every time we have a gig there is always a nana that babysits our little one 🙂 We have full support from both sides though so it isn’t a problem.

What do you have coming up in terms of releases and gigs?
Well we have ‘Magical’ Ep coming up on Click records in January (make sure you check it out!) and we also have a live video from our recent gig with our latest tunes (including ‘Apologies’) that will be out early January too, supporting the release. We also have scheduled a release of remixes on our ‘Glimpse’ EP including remix from Himbrecht and Sterling Grove.

How did you put together your guest mix for the radio show & what have you included – any exclusives or surprises?
This mix is our last mix in 2018 and we kind of summed the whole year up: one hour of what we liked this year and what direction we wanted to evolve. There is our upcoming ‘Magical’ tune and one of our all-time-favorites ‘Let myself go’. Hope you enjoy the vibe and see you next year!

This question always comes up in New York….”Where’s the after hours”? In the city that never sleeps you know there always is one. Ralph Session delivers four tracks on Half Assed Records, that are a window to how New York gets down. Some after hours call for tracks filled with thick bass lines, gospel samples and filtered chords. Others are a bit more funk/boogie infused. Some nights call for a bit of acid with shades of Gorgio Moroder. While other parties go for that dreamy deep house. You know the kind that takes you to a special place when you close your eyes. This Ep is that soundtrack for those late nights.

We grabbed the first play of lead track ‘New York Vibrations’ – a groove led, rubbery roller, with warm, gooey chords bringing a timeless New York feel.

MXR.001 is the first vinyl sampler provided by the PITS label of Detroit, Michigan. Pressed at the local and reliable Archer Recordings, the record is an homage to the Motown sounds of the city with some bumping lo-fi beats to back it up. We are thrilled to have the first play of Bale Defoe‘s “Swang 2 The Right” – a low slung cut of deep house goodness.

With his first EP titled The High Press on ELE Records of Berlin, Bale Defoe began to breakout of his hometown of Detroit and he has continued to follow in that vain. Providing a steady stream of grooving bass heavy cuts among the underground, he has established a style for himself that stands out and always gets heads nodding. His first EP on PITS, Post Quebec Blues, was the beginning of a great partnership with label manger John Joseph and he has certainly been one of the main contributors to the project. Having played a recent after hours event in Detroit as part of the PITS series, PRTL, he kept the floor pounding past the 2AM marker.
He also works with Ryan McCray, another Detroit DJ conspirator, on the project Choose Better Friends. They host an event series at local reliable dive Donovan’s and bring out lots of quality artists, with the latest featuring 313 Acid Queen, aka Rebecca Goldberg. McCray and Defoe also share a musical collaboration, Black Bass, that will soon play a party hosted by local DJ duo So Vague. With a full plate of unreleased material ready to be unleashed, keep an eye out for him.
