James Zabiela sets sail with the latest release on his Born Electric label here with the debut release of 2018 in the form of ‘Vines’.  A track that nearly never saw the light of day according to the man himself.

“Vines was originally an unfinished piece re-appropriated for the mix that didn’t really make sense until I built the remainder of the song into the mix. It only felt ‘finished’ after I came up with some lyrics and spent time mangling them through my OP1 sampler. I found fun glitching them out with some broken tape deck effects.”

The those lyrics truly are the key element of the Original track, flowing and floating over the palette of beautiful textured pads and chords that appear through the intro, building towards the sharp, heavily swung beat, a groove which takes you instantly, a chunky yet delicate slice of electronic goodness filled with emotion.

Luke Abbot‘s Earlham Mystics project provides one of the remixes, and it certainly picks the pace up and raises the energy levels. Turning the track into a more energetic, club ready track with the looped vocal which filters in and out over the intro building anticipation of the keys and synths which bring a more uplifting house track feel and a real contrast to the original.

The HOLOVR remix on the other hand is a much more ambient affair with layers of soft delicate keys, arpeggiator synths, dreamy atmospherics, and a bouncy subby bass line. A trippy, acid tinged, intelligently constructed take on the original, full of hypnotising melodies which combine to spine tingling effect.
