TL;DR: Anish Kumar and Baalti have teamed up under a new collaborative alias: Stunt Doubles, and their debut EP is out now on Method 808 – the label fresh off two big LPs from SHERELLE and Shanti Celeste this year.

This one’s summery and fun. Tamil-cinema meets filter house, wrapped in a nostalgic, tongue-in-cheek concept that imagines Stunt Doubles as a forgotten Indian band, rediscovered on a dusty VHS tape.

Welcome to the world of Stunt Doubles. A fever dream of vintage Indian pop culture, surreal cinema, and rare groove exploration. A forgotten outfit rediscovered on a dusty VHS or crate-dug record.  A collaborative identity from Anish Kumar (UK DJ and producer) and Jaiveer & Mihir, the minds behind the duo Baalti.

Stunt Doubles is here to be cinematic, celebratory, and playfully strange. A theatrical, genre-blurring alternative; a project that’s as much about world-building as it is about crafting timeless grooves. Expect identity games, surrealist visuals, and an evolving cast of characters, all playing into the band’s name, and serving as a vessel for the trio to explore ideas that fall outside their usual sonic worlds.

Drawing on their shared South Asian heritage and a deep love of crate-digging, sample-chopping, and leftfield concepts, their aesthetic pulls from a wide cast of influences, Indian wedding brass bands, Sgt. Pepper’s psychedelia, disco-era uncles, and surrealist comedy.

Speaking on the concept and creation of Stunt Doubles, the trio say: “We were both mutual fans of each other, and the collaboration came about quite naturally from our love of crate digging. The tracks came together super quickly – out of manic 30-minute beat battle power sessions while locked away in Berwick-upon-Tweed, and ended up sounding quite cinematic, like they could soundtrack old movie clips and action sequences. So we really leaned into worldbuilding in that vein, creating a new fictional ‘band’ separate from our solo projects and playing theatrical, weird, and over-the-top characters.”

“The ‘Stunt Doubles’ name and visuals came from our experiences of brown people getting mixed up for each other all the time, and we really pushed that idea to a bit of an extreme.”

Their debut release, Stunt Doubles (Pt.1), sets the tone with two high-concept, dancefloor-focused tracks that are vibrant and evocative.

Title Theme was born during the group’s early ‘beat battle’ sessions, where each member cooked up an idea in isolation over a 30-minute timer, then returned to the room to battle it out and crown a winner. Sparked by Mihir channeling housey energy after hearing some of Anish’s demos, the track evolved into a dramatic, choppy groover that feels like it could soundtrack a ’90s Tamil movie action sequence, or serve as the opening theme to the world of Stunt Doubles.

Chalo Chalo” began with a riff from Anish before Baalti layered in their signature elements, karate chop vocals, percussion, and Bollywood disco flourishes. The result is a feel-good, summertime tune, blending cinematic strings with filter-house sensibilities, wrapped in a euphoric, nostalgic haze. The project lands via Method 808, a label dedicated to spotlighting cutting-edge electronic music with a global perspective. Known for championing artists who blur the lines of genre and identity, Method 808 provides a fitting home for a project that thrives on imagination, mischief, and reinvention.
