Hey Nolan, welcome to CC 🙂 Firstly, what is your background and how did you get into music?

Thanks. Somehow I’ve managed to survive  full time in the music industry for the last 15 years or so. I do a lot of engineering, mixing and mastering so fortunately don’t rely on gigs so much these days! In 2005 I launched Berwick Street Records to release my own music on vinyl and since then have released literally hundreds of tracks on loads of various labels from Bedrock, Get Physical, Mobilee to Kittball, Nervous & Skint Records.

How would you describe your sound – do you think your music falls into a particular genre?

I have a problem with fitting into genres as I don’t have a specific sound or style that I produce over and over again. Consequently I have had to come up with loads of different monikers to release under so I don’t completely confuse people who follow me if they like one particular style! So for the more Techno sounding stuff I have a project called Cypherpunx which I do with Douglas Horner. We have released on Bedrock & Rebellion with our next release about to come out on Crosstown Rebels. I also have a downtempo project  called Flip Fantazia (also with Douglas) which we originally started to write music for Sync but we’ve just released our debut artist album called The Trip on vinyl and digital. We’ve released with Ninja Tune PM, Cavendish, Deep East Music, BMG PM, Deli Music plus more with our Tv/Sync music so far. I also have another solo downtempo project called T_Mo which I’ve released loads of music for Sync some of which has featured on Masterchef, Sky News, The One Show etc. I used to make Tech House under the name Timo Garcia but quit that guise a couple of years ago when I saw the direction Tech House was taking! So on a House tip I’m still releasing under my NOLAN guise (Nolan being my real middle name!).

You are releasing a couple of tracks soon on Sasha’s label Last Night On Earth in collab with CC boss Just Her – how did this come about and how did the projects come together?

Yes very excited about this release. We have one track coming out on a Sasha compilation and the other as a single with another track I’ve done which features Amber Jolene on vocals too. I’ll try and work all three into this guest mix. It’s great working with Just Her since she also lives in Brighton and so we could work together in the studio (pre-lockdown).

What is your production process – is each project or track different? And what are your key pieces of studio kit?

Every track is different. Sometimes I just start making beats but most of the time it’s a sample or hook idea or vocal which triggers the process. I’ve just bought a Moog Sub37 so am looking forward to spending time learning and using this synth. But my go to soft synths are Omnisphere and Pigments.

What would be your dream label to release on and why?

Crosstown Rebels has always been a goal and finally next month we have a Cypherpunx release coming out on it so we’re very excited about that.  It’s a collaboration with our friend Luke Brancaccio so keep an eye out for that one!

What is the coolest, wildest or worst gig you have ever played and why?

A few years ago I was touring Brazil quite often as Timo Garcia and one gig I did a few years running was called MOB Festival which was basically a 72 hour non stop party on a cruise ship holding 2500 clubbers which went from São Paulo to Rio and back stopping off at a little Island to get off for a day party on a beach. The line ups were always huge too so it was great to get to know some of the big name DJs who were on board for a few days too.

What do you have coming up in terms of releases and gigs (or live streams)?

Release wise I have NOLAN tracks coming out on Last Night On Earth, Bedrock and Mobilee. As Cypherpunx we have releases coming up on Crosstown Rebels and Global Underground. Plus we have a few remixes of our Flip Fantazia album project on the boil so they should be coming out before the end of the year too 😉
On the gig front…. nothing! thanks Covid!

How did you put together your guest mix for the radio show & what have you included – any exclusives or surprises?

I’ve showcased a couple of my Nolan releases in the mix including the ones coming out on Sasha’s LNOE label and a few promos I’ve received lately.

A first-rate producer in the house and techno scene, Gel Abril continues to garner local and international fans alike. Recent releases on Josh Wink’s Ovum Recordings, Riva Starr’s Snatch! Records and M.A.N.D.Y.’s Get Physical Music have helped burgeon his standing as one of the scene’s true heavy-hitters. Once again he delivers his eclectic brand of deep techno via his latest “Prolex” EP on Francesca Lombardo’s Echoe imprint, and to celebrate this release, we invited him along for a guest mix and an interview:

Welcome to CC invites 🙂 Firstly, what is your background & how did you get into music?
Well I started at the tender age of 13, playing for my classmates with a boombox and some lights. My mom fixed me a job as an assistant painter in the holidays and with that money I bought my first technics 1200, it was definitely love at first sight between me and the music. I was influenced by bands like Depeche Mode Front 242, New Order, Kraftwerk and more.

How would you describe your sound – do you think your music falls into a particular genre?
I would describe it, if I may, as a sophisticated mixture of house and techno, always with an enchanting groove to it, I think it has had that distinctive sound to it over the years.

You have just released your ‘Prolex’ EP on Echoe. What was the inspiration behind this project and how did the collab with the label come about?
I always liked dubby organic raw grooves and I think it reflects well on the ep. I have known Francesca’s name for many years and she approached me on Instagram. We started talking about music and other things then she suggested to do something for her label and from there here we are.

What is your production process – is each project or track different? And what are your key pieces of studio kit?
I always start with the groove and drum section. Once I have that loop that I can listen to over and over again I continue with the other elements such as pad, lead, fx and strings etc. I use a lot of Native Instruments Maschine and the 808 drum machine.

Can you tell us your deepest, darkest secret?
Secrets are not to be told 🙂

What is the coolest, wildest or worst gig you have ever played and why?
I have had many many amazing gigs over the years but there is one really weird gig and possibly the worst that sticks out, the name of which I would not mention out of respect. A few DJs played before me and the people just stood and looked at that DJ without moving or doing anything, the whole scenario was really surreal. As a professional I said to myself I would do my best to get the people going but once I was in the booth and started to play I had the same thing, the people were like zombies. Just insane, the worst Dj gig in my life 🙂

What do you have coming up in terms of releases and gigs (or live streams)?
I just released an EP on Rawax which is doing well on vinyl, plus I have a new EP on my label Closed Circuits and more. I am playing this Saturday in a Club in Hamburg for some friends, after 6 months without playing, I am looking forward to it!

How did you put together your guest mix and what have you included – any exclusives or surprises?
I arranged the music I wanted to play in my head the days before then I tested them on the fly and felt that they were working great together and off course I have included some of my productions plus a special bootleg and more, I hope you like it!

Berlin based Jepe makes his debut on Constant Circles with a killer remix of Joal, following solid releases on the likes of Aeon, Frau Blau & Moodmusic. We invited him along for a chat and a guest mix on the radio show with Just Her.

Hey Jepe, welcome to CC 🙂 Firstly, what is your background and how did you get into music?

I always say I am a DJ by accident. I was doing radio, having a radio show on a local radio and was invited for djing at a party in the university. At that time indie, and indie rock and some electronic. Very uk influenced.. I remember Apollo For Fourty, Arkarna, Goldie, Underworld, Prodigy.. It was 1995. That party went to a club.. And I follow.. And stayed there as a resident for 16 years…

How would you describe your sound – do you think your music falls into a particular genre?

Well maybe.. I think I was never a one genre guy and somehow this may interfere with my career.. for good and for the bad. I know I have my fingerprint with some sort of Melancholic atmospheres but nothing specifically, you could say it’s deep house, melodic or indie.

You are making your debut on Constant Circles with a killer remix of Joal – how did you approach the remix and what direction did you take it?

I told Joal that i really like that track atmosphere and that transported me to a good dancefloor Vibe. Joal is a master on beat programming and does great compositions. There was a part more complex that I would like to deconstruct more into my own way to play it.. and he was very happy when I suggested it.. so I give it a try. With the excitement I got more involved and by the end I was going for a more bouncy bassline and a synth Arp line.

What is your production process – is each project or track different? And what are your key pieces of studio kit?

I tend to start with a very easy beat. Usually (unless I have a clear idea) I had a bassline and then build the beats around it. I don’t think I have a very complex beat patterns. Basically they are add ons to the bassline and synth parts. I never start for some reason with a melody. Usually I get bored very easily so if i do a melody I know I would delete it…

What would be your dream label to release on and why?

I would say a personal achievement would be an EP on Kompakt for the history and what it always represented for my on electronic music. I am also very happy with my relation with Moodmusic that started last year though Sasse, because it was always a big inspiration.

Can you tell us something that most people won’t know about you?

I dont like football and never liked or ate anything with sugar. It Is not a trendy or health related thing it’s just I never liked it.

What do you have coming up in terms of releases and gigs (or live streams)?

I wish i would have gigs. Somehow suddenly releasing music has another sense of purpose and fortunately people can also listen club music outside or without a club meaning. And I think that also affects our creativity nowadays. I just had a remix with my friend Takumi Motokawa (as Battera) for Of Norway on Connaisseur. I will have this release on Constant Circles (Remixing Joal) also an EP on AEON that I am very happy and proud. Also a track on Hosted and my album remix parts on Moodmusic (with Dod Palese, Denite, and Takumi Motokawa remixes).. I am probably forgetting something.. (maybe on purpose).

How did you put together your guest mix for the radio show & what have you included – any exclusives or surprises?

I try not to overthink when I want to do a show or record something. I always like to add my new tracks and some new material I think they can show part of my future sound, and mix it with some people or labels I like or new projects I appreciate. This is no exception there are some Jepe tracks, new material, future releases and cool tracks which I hope people enjoy:)
